All-Star shortstop, Nomar Garciaparra, will reportedly sign a one-day contract with the Boston Red Sox today, only to announce his retirement from baseball. The 36-year old Garciaparra played with the Red Sox from 1996 until halfway through the 2004 season.

He hit .323 during his career with Boston, including 178 home runs, 690 RBI, and a .370 on-base percentage. During his time with the Red Sox, Nomar went to five All-Star games. In 1997, he was the Rookie of the Year.

One indication of Nomar’s popularity in Boston was Jimmy Fallon’s (a long-time Boston fan) frequent skit on Saturday Night Live in which he repeatedly shouted “Nomaaarrrr” in an idolizing manner. In 2004, however, the love between Nomar and much of Boston seemed to outwear its welcome, ending in a trade to the Chicago Cubs.

While making his return to Boston, Garciaparra is also expected to announce that he is going to work for ESPN.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Red Sox slim right hander Clay Buchholz made his debut against the Orioles on Sunday. Buchholz showed a new number, 11, from his old number 61. 61 was previously worn by Bronson Arroyo, who was dealt to the Cincinnati Reds. 11 is an odd number for a starting pitcher, but then again, it seems 61 is too.

It will be an interesting Spring for Buchholz. The Red Sox have three potential aces in Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, and John Lackey. Tim Wakefield has been with the Red Sox since the mid 1990's and could challenge Johnny Pesky in a competition for Mr. Red Sox. That leaves Daisuke Matsuzaka and Buchholz to battle it out for spot number 5 in the Sox rotation. The Red Sox invested quite a bit just to sign Dice-K with the posting fee when he came from Japan before 2007. It paid off in the contributions Dice-K made in that World Series winning campaign. But last year was a disappointment, after Matsuzaka led Japan to another win in the World Baseball Classic, at the expense of the MLB regular season.

Meanwhile, Buchholz started 2009 in AAA at Pawtucket and dominated. He finally got a chance to help at the big league level and made it count. Now the question is where he will fit for 2010. Buchholz allowed a first inning homer to Nick Markakis. It was the second home run for Markakis and the twelfth for the Orioles. Buchholz allowed some additional runners but no more damage in the first.

The second was a disaster. Garrett Atkins led off the frame with a double. Miguel Abreu singled and Cesar Izturis followed with a true Baltimore chop to score a second run. Abreu and Izturis went on to score, and Buchholz was able to complete the inning, but allowed four runs in two innings. The Sox eventually won in the late innings, when most of the fans had left for the early bird dinner specials. But Spring Training games are rarely about wins and losses. It is about players getting their work in and making their case for a starting spot. Buchholz missed on that opportunity in this outing.
</intro>

    <intro>
Toronto has been home to the Blue Jays for years.

Boston is becoming the home for the Red J's.

It starts with the pitching, where Boston has three pitchers, each one capable of being an ace on any big league staff. Jon Lester and Josh Beckett will be joined by new addition John Lackey from the Angels. All three have first names that start with the letter J. So does the captain, catcher Jason Varitek, who has been replaced by starter Victor Martinez, but still could be on the all J team. So could colorful closer Jonathan Papelbon.

The Sox have more J players on the bench, including infielder Jed Lowrie, and outfielders Josh Reddick and Jeremy Hermida. Sox starting outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and J.D. Drew brings the total number to 10 of players who start with the letter 10. This could be 40% of the Red Sox roster.

Now the Blue Jays have Jose Bautista in the outfield and John Buck at catcher, but in a competition of players with first names that start with J, but the Red J's may outnumber the Blue Jays.
</intro>

    <intro>
On Monday Red Sox righthander, Diasuke Matsuzaka had a throwing session today. He started by throwing from a distance of approximately two hundred feet, and then threw thirty pitches off a mound to a standing catcher.Dice-K may get a bullpen session in by the end of the week and the righthander thinks that that day will be Thursday.

Matsuzaka wiil likely not be ready for Opening Day, but Boston has three off days in the first ten days of the season. This means that Boston could go with a four man rotation for a time. If Dice-K is not ready in that time Michael Bowden could take his spot in the rotation for a time.

Terry Francona had this to say"That was about as good a day,I think,as you could have.I don't think you can throw the ball like that and not be totally healthy.So probably start thinking about toward the end of the week,getting him some real mound work where he's throwing some sides and throwing to hitters and going through that progression. But that was a real,real good day."

Will Matsuzaka return to form in 2010? Only time will tell.
</intro>

The Boston Red Sox have a familiar problem heading into spring training; Too many quality starting pitchers.

Back in 2005 the Red Sox were confident that, even though they had parted ways with consummate ace Pedro Martinez, that there were plenty of pitchers to send to the mound to construct a rotation that would be effective. However an injury to Curt Shilling had the team scrambling to find it's ace, and identity.

Though Tim Wakefield and Bronson Arroyo had above average years, they were no match for the monstrous rotation the Chicago White Sox threw at us in the ALDS. Spelling an early demise for a short series rotation of Wakefield, Matt Clement, and David Wells.

Fret not Red Sox Nation! That's all prologue to some good news.

Heading into 2010 the Sox will send a pitcher that has proven Ace-worthiness 3 times out of 5 with Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and John Lackey. This gives this rotation one of the few cases of "too much pitching" that could be viewed as a bit of a problem, one they don't mind having however.

Of the non-aces making their way to the mound for the Sox this season will be; Clay Buchholz, Tim Wakefield, and Daisuke Matsuzaka. All pitchers have their issues behind them, and are looking to prove they're worthy of the fourth and fifth spot in the rotation.

There are plenty of solutions to this problem, however each and every one of them leaves a pitcher miffed in the process. Though it may ruffle his feathers, Buchholz may benefit from starting the year in AAA again and keeping his innings under control for the first month or two of the season, seeing Matsuzaka and Wakefield filling out the rotation.

After the first few months of the season starting pitching will start to get thinner with the lack of off-days and Wakfield could be moved to a spot-starting role to spell tired aces and Buchholz could take the fifth spot in the rotation, leaving him a bit fresher down the stretch.

The only other viable option right now is to trade Buchholz, however he has next to no value on the market since there is little demand, I would expect to see him waived in the San Diego Padres face in July along with a massive package of prospects and finally get the Adrian Gonzales deal done. (We may even see this deal get done before July is Ortiz starts out slow this year again.)

Whatever the 2010 season brings the Red Sox, there's a good chance that the Sox will have an ace on the mound when they need one. And that having too much pitching is a problem the Red Sox are looking forward to dealing with.

    <intro>
Well I have been gone for a week. Last Tuesday, I wrote about the Colts win, and then put the keyboard away for a while.

If you really want to know, I got married. If you really, really want to know, there is a blog about that too. But let's just keep this about sports, and not about bedroom gymnastics.

While I was gone I heard a brief mention about Rick Pitino going back to the NBA for the Nets. Funny, I remember a time when the Celtics were terrible, and thought they were going to get the first pick, and Pitino came in, and it was a disaster. But the Pitino talk seemed to last one day, more of a sign that it really is a slow sports time right now. B-Dub hit it right on the head in his article.

I've been too busy to really pay any attention to the Winter Olympics, but I am sure the mid Atlantic is still willing to ship Vancouver some snow. I would say something about Danica Patrick getting into a crash, but this is the newlywed Chriso, so I think I would like to keep the peace at home. I also had a few thoughts about Jim Calhoun. The Huskies coach has accomplished so much in his Hall of Fame career, does he need to continue? I want to be clear that I would not want to take away someone's joy or livelihood, but I hope that his medical condition is not being compromised. I'm not a doctor, but sometimes I play one in this blog.

I also noticed that Frank Thomas retired. He could enter the Hall with Randy Johnson. He also could be in conversations where people might accuse him of steroids because of the era. And that is unfair, and that is one of the reasons I think the 104 names in 2003 should come out. Then, if Thomas is not on the list, put away any talk of it or guesses about it.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona was in my neighborhood on his way down to Spring Training for a kid's one day baseball camp. It was interesting to hear him on local radio, and it also brought Sox Talk to the area for a day at least.

That's about all for now, kind of a mixed bag from the old vacation. Not sure what the tags will be, or the sport or team. So to wrap up and give it a definite topic, I am thrilled to announce that I will be in Florida next month to visit Spring Training for the first time. Not sure of all the details, but will blog about some more soon. I will not see the Red Sox in Fort Myers, but will probably catch them on the road.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Red Sox have done a lot this offseason, but have they Really? We won't know until the season,but we can guess.

The Red Sox first tried to compensate for not signing Jason Bay by accuiring Jeremy Hermeida and Mike Cameron. There are two major flaws with this plan. One is that Mike Cameron is not Jason Bay. He is a better defensive player, but he is not going to come close to Jason Bay's offensive numbers. Also, Jeremy Hermeida has played well, but has not really proved that he is a starter on a championship calibar team. Even if he plays well, Hermeida is only going to be a journeymen.

Also, the starting rotation is injury prone. John Lackey has been injured as a member of the Angels and Diasuke was injured last season. However the Sox do have Clay Bucholtz, so as long as only one starter goes down the Sox should be fine, but if two go down the Sox may be in trouble. Even more trouble if Tampa Bay stays in the division and wild card races. The Red Sox should be okay if Josh Beckett pitches like he did in 2007 and if only one starter went down.

Also, Bill Hall and Marco Scutaro were signed to sure up the infield. Bill Hall is a good offensive contributer and I think that it's a good pick up. Scutaro is a mistake because Alex Gonzalez is one of the best defensive shortstops in the game and the Sox need defense to succeed. Scutaro has never really been on a good team , so there is no way to tell if he can play under pressure. What do you do with Mike Lowell? He was a good player,but his time is over. You can't trade him because he can't pass a physical. The Sox should release him and retire Tony C's number. It's long overdue.

The Sox should contend and make the playoffs, but will they beat the Yankees and win the World Series? Only time will tell.

The deal is the biggest ever for a relief pitcher with less then four years of service, and is larger then Eric Gagne's $8 million deal in 2005, who at the time also had less then four years of service in the big leagues as a closer. However, there are seven major league closers that have deals which pay them $10 million or more.

Since 2006, when Papelbon took over the Red Sox closer job, only eight closers have had seasons of 35 saves or more, a strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio of 10 or more, and an ERA lower than 2.50. Papelbon has reached those milestones three times, and he just missed doing it for four years in a row if not for the fact that he just missed in 2006 with a K/IP ratio of 9.9. This past season, Papelbon had 38 saves during the regular-season with only three blown saves, and for his career he has just 17 blown saves, an 89 percent conversion rate.

"My whole thing is consistency,'' Papelbon said. "I'm not one of these guys with a sub-2 ERA one year and a high-3 the next. My whole thing in all of this is the environment you pitch in. Wouldn't you want a guy to pitch in Boston, New York and Philadelphia who you know has consistently had just three or four blown saves a year. That's a rarity in itself."

Papelbon said at the beginning of the year that while he was not opposed to considering a multiyear deal with Boston, he was willing to keep signing year to year deals until after the 2011 season when he reaches free agency.

"At the same time, I'm not afraid to show that, hey, I want to be with the Red Sox. I'd love to have that sense of security of being with a team and knowing, 'Hey, they want me, and I want them, let's have a happy marriage. But what do I have to give up to be in that marriage? Understand, I'm in the prime of my career. Why would I give up something? I'd give up something if it's fair to both sides, but I want to do things for my fellow closers, just like Mariano Rivera paved the way for me. I want every closer out there, man, to get every penny they deserve.''

However, there were a couple of issues in 2009 that caused some concern. His walks were three times higher last season as he issued 24 as he only issued 8 walks in 2008. This is a huge reason as to why his strikeout-to-walk ratio fell to a career-worst 3.17 while his WHIP (walks plus hits per nine innings pitched) rose to a career-high 1.47.

Papelbon was one of four Red Sox players to file for arbitration. The others were relievers Manny Delcarmen and Ramon Ramirez as well as outfielder Jeremy Hermida.

Tuesday was the deadline for the Red Sox and the players to exchange contract numbers. If an agreement is not reached, then an arbitration hearing would be held, and an arbitrator would choose one of the two figures submitted.

Since Theo Epstein became general manager after the 2002 season, the Red Sox have not had a player go to an arbitration hearing.

    <intro>
Theo Epstein has been busy adding fuel to the hot stove season.

He has earned a break, and he will take it tonight. Epstein will participate in his annual tradition, Hot Stove Cool Music at the House of Blue's across from Fenway Park. The charity that benefits is the foundation to be named later, a clever name that puts a spin on the ever popular player to be named later, who has been traded more than any other player.

The concert wraps up a busy week for the Red Sox GM. The Sox acquired Adrian Beltre to play 3rd base. It is a move that made Casey Kotchman available for a trade to the Seattle Mariners and will keep Kevin Youkilis at first.

It also means that the Sox have very little faith in Mike Lowell. In my latest Red Sox feature on Lowell, I commented how the love affair with the Red Sox and Lowell is over. They tried to trade him, and pay his salary, in a move that ended when Lowell could not pass a physical. Now it appears Lowell will just be on the bench. The bright side is, he could get some ABs as a right handed DH if David Ortiz struggles.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox continue to make moves that emphasize pitching and defense. The old adage is that is the way win baseball games. Everybody loves offense. There was the commercial at the start of the steroids era that said "Chicks dig the long ball" (kind of seems shallow now....) The Red Sox are going the other way. Pitching and defense.
</intro>

    <intro>
Don't you know how everyone wants to share pictures at Christmas?

So I was reading Kerri's 50th article (which I naturally recommend) and absolutely loved the picture at the end of the young Kerri as a Mets fan. So then I went to my favorite picture of me, on top of the Green Monster at Fenway with James Taylor. It was 2003, Kid's Opening Day. Taylor sang the National Anthem and then came up on top of the wall to check out the new seats which were just completed at the time.

So come on family, get out those pics....
</intro>

    <intro>
In 2008, the Red Sox parted ways with Manny Ramirez, but traded for Jason Bay.

Massachusetts' nickname is the Bay State. There is no truth to the rumor that it was a result of that trade.

But Jason Bay did well in Boston, and the Sox did well too. They went to the 7th game in the ALCS in 2008. And although they were swept in the ALDS in 2009, it was another good regular season and a competitive one for the Boston 9. But that was not enough for Bay, who rejected the Red Sox offer of 60 million for 4 years. The Red Sox went in a different direcion, and in my opinion, a better direction, and went after the top free agent pitcher available. They signed John Lackey.

I hear fans complain that the Red Sox spend money like the Yankees do, but there is a major difference. With the Yankees, there is an "AND" while with the Red Sox, it is an "OR". The Yankees were able to sign C.C. Sabathia AND Mark Teixeira last off season. This year, the Sox could sign Lackey OR Bay. Like the Patriots, who put a "value" on each player, the Sox gave Bay a value and would not exceed it. Bay found a few more dollars with the New York Mets. But will it include the opportunity to win? Will it bring happiness?

Bye, Bay. And best of luck. I'm glad my team saw more of a value in quality pitching.
</intro>

    <intro>
As the year comes to an end, there are plenty of attempts to recap the year.

And when I take a personal inventory, it was a very good year. A new city and a new job, and things are going well with the new wife. But as a sports fan? It was a tough year.

The Lakers and the Yankees won their respective championships. Both on their own would be hard to take. As a combo, there could not be anything worse. The Steelers won the Superbowl, which really did not effect me in a positive way or a negative way, but on the whole, I would have rather seen the Cardinals win it. The Penguins winning the Stanley Cup had no effect either, although I think it locks up Pittsburgh as sports city of the year. North Carolina won the Final Four, but it happened a year too soon. Now, I work in NC every once in a while. It would not have a big impact on my life, but it would mean more than it did then.

In football, 2009 might be remembered as the year of the undefeated teams. But in the end, it did not matter. Only the top two undefeated teams in college football will play each other, the others will battle in meaningless bowls. In the NFL, the Saints and Colts remained undefeated longer than any two teams in previous seasons. In the end, the Saints tripped up first, and then the Colts quit on the attempt to create history.

In baseball, steroid talk dominated the headlines again more than it should have. The fall from grace happened to some of the biggest stars including Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez. Off the field issues also plagued Tiger Woods in 2009. Here's hoping 2010 brings more attention on the field than off of it. Among the saddest of stories included the deaths of young stars line the Bengal's Chris Henry and the Angel's Nick Adenhart. Here's hoping that we can avoid tragedies like those in 2010.

On a personal note, it seems ironic. 2008 and 2007 were not very good in my personal life, but the teams I root for thrived. The '08 Celtics won the NBA Finals, the '07 Red Sox won the World Series, and the '07 Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season, no other team has (and take that Colts, at least my team never quit). But in my own life, things were bad in those years, and maybe I should be thankful for the distraction sports provides.

By contrast, 2009 was an excellent year for me in my personal life, while my favorite teams did not enjoy the same success. After the Red Sox ended their 86 year drought in 2004, John Kerry lost the election the following month. My brother called me and asked, if it was possible, would I trade a Kerry win for a Red Sox win. I admitted that I would keep things the way they worked out. I suppose this year, I feel the same way. If I could have personal happiness or continue to see my teams win, I will take the personal happiness.

But here is hoping that it will all go my way in 2010.

And hoping things go your way in 2010 too, just not for the Yankee fans.

Happy New Year everyone.
</intro>

    <intro>
It's the end of the year, and a time when people reflect on the year.

One of the lists I always seem to read is the list of people that died during the year. I'm not sure why, maybe there is something about getting older and starting to read the obituaries. I know some comic once said you do that to make sure you're not in it. Of course, if you look at the ages of those that passed away and notice there are lots of people around your age, then it is easy to start to worry.

So I was going through some of these year end lists, when I came across a slideshow from Comcast on people in the world of sports that died this year. There are 24 names, and I will not recap them all, but I do recommend the slideshow. It starts with Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. Jack Kemp and Chuck Daley are both listed, and to be honest, I missed both of those stories when they happened. But as a Red Sox fan, I did hear about Dominic DiMaggio, the "little professor", and younger brother of the great Joe DiMaggio. Also included in the list are a number of young stars like UConn's Jasper Howard (1989), Chris Henry (1983), Nick Adenhart (1986), and Steve McNair (1973).

Just a quick post in memory of those that died in 2009.

Rest in peace.
</intro>

    <intro>
Dear Santa,

Hope all is well with you and Mrs. Claus up at the North Pole.

This is my Christmas Sports List. I am going to stay away from the obvious, I mean I know I've been good, but asking for the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, and the Stanley Cup might be too much. So I'll keep it simple...

For the Patriots, I would like another shot at Indy. I think they might get it too. They are about to wrap up another AFC East title. After a home playoff in wildcard weekend, they would go to Indianapolis or San Diego. The Pats do well facing a team the second time in a season, and did quite well in the first match with the Colts. Yes, the coach went for it on fourth down. It obviously did not work, but I still like a coach that has guts. "In Bill We Trust".

For the Red Sox, I usually would ask for pitching. You can never have enough. But with the recent addition of John Lackey, and the signs that Jason Bay is sailing off to another team, I think that I will change my wish list. A bat or two to help bolster the line-up. Oh, and Santa, bring plenty of coal for the Yankee fans. They have not been nice this year.

For the Celtics, I would like a win on Christmas Day. It's great that they are playing on Christmas. Celtics in game one, Lakers in game 2. It is the unofficial start to the regular season, those other games are really just the warm-up. Of course, the real season starts in April. It's a long way from December to June. MCHomer is predicting the crown will go to the West Coast. Here's hoping Boston will be the king of basketball hill again.

For the Bruins, I would like a win on New Year's Day. They are playing the Winter Classic at Fenway against Philadelphia. However, if I got every Christmas wish, it would not be a game against the Flyers. I try as hard as I can, but it just is hard to root against Philly. I even read B-Dub's articles two or three times, and I still like Philadelphia. The classic should be Boston against Montreal. Santa, can you take care of that?

I guess that's about it, Santa. I mean, I would love to see BC win over USC. I have to be true to my school. And my Christmas Wish for Tiger Woods would be for everyone to leave him alone. Enough is enough, and bedroom gymnastics is not really a sport. It would be great if you could make the Nationals relevant in baseball. But that will do it for this Christmas.

Have a safe flight, remember to bring something extra special for those in the Service who can not make it home this Christmas. I'm sure you will remember all of the good girls and boys too. Add a final wish for peace on Earth.

Merry Christmas to All, and to all a good night.

Even the Yankee fans.
</intro>

    <intro>
Sources for ESPNBoston.com say that outfielder Jason Bay most likely has played his last game for the Boston Red Sox.

Bay, a standout in Boston in 2009, is a free agent, and the Red Sox earlier this month signed Mike Cameron to a two-year deal to play left field, Bay’s natural position. The team also has Jacoby Ellsbury, who can play center field or left.

Though reports on local Boston radio stations cited Red Sox team sources as saying that the team was considering extending its budget to make room for a four-year, $60 million offer to Bay, the most recent word is that the team has moved on without Bay in its plans.

The team is already over its budget, reports say, after it signed free-agent pitcher John Lackey from Anaheim to a five-year, $82 million deal.

Were the team to add another big contract, it would go over the luxury tax threshold and would need to pay a 22.5 percent luxury tax on every dollar spent over $170 million.

The only other known offer to Bay is from the New York Mets, who reportedly offered Bay a four-year deal worth between $60 million and $65 million.
<intro>
If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you know I am originally from Boston.

I am a diehard Red Sox fan, and that can be hard to find. There seem to be plenty of bandwagon fans. In a recent article, I gave a definition of diehard. I have been thinking about it a bit more after reading "The Many States Of Hockey". Heidi writes about growing up rooting for one team and then moving and following a new team.

I left Boston last Summer, and quickly realized that the Red Sox fan came with me. I recently received a Christmas present from a new friend in North Carolina that reflected my identity as a Red Sox fan. The funny part is, living in an area that does not have a Major League team, it leaves an opening to root for any team.

The local AAA team, the Norfolk Tides, is an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Still, there do not seem to be many Oriole fans. The Tides were with the New York Mets for many years, and only recently switched affiliation. The closest MLB team is the Washington Nationals. Maybe there would be more Nationals and Orioles interest if either team had a winning season, or even showed a chance of being a contender.

There are plenty of Yankee fans, as I mentioned in my article "I am recovering", a reflection of the New York fans who came out of the woodwork after the World Series. But, in the interest of balance, I have found more Red Sox fans. It seems these wise people moved away from the cold. I continue to get e-mails from home telling me about snow and negative wind chill, with single digit temperatures. I continue to go down to Virginia Beach several days a week. Boston can keep the cold.

But I am not the only one who left Boston. The Sox keep changing. Mike Lowell is gone. John Lackey is coming. The Hot Stove is cooking. I am trying to keep track of the changes from a distance. It reminds me of several times when I would travel to Detroit. It started in 1990. The Tigers had won the World Series in 1984, and had a strong campaign in 1987. But by 1990, they were on the way down. Sparky Anderson was still the manager. The team went through a long stretch of changes. I watched the end of Tiger Stadium and the start of Comerica Park. I saw an interesting campaign that celebrated the return of Alan Trammell. The only problem was, he was not returning as a player, but as a manager. The Tigers continued to struggle, but I would continue to go see the team. Very quickly, the Tigers became 2nd on my list to Fenway for most home games. My trips to Detroit ended in 2005. The Tigers returned to relevance in 2006 when new manager Jim Leyland led them to the World Series. In 2009, I noticed as the Tigers faded down the stretch, I was more interested in the race with the Twins than if Detroit won. I guess my interest in the Tigers has faded. But in only a few months, the Tides open the season against the Durham Bulls....
</intro>

    <intro>
Warning: written by a Bostonian

And I can already imagine some of the comments, complaining about the arrogance of Boston fans. Which is one of the great things about the decade. Boston was insignificant as a sports town at the start of the decade and now Boston is a place where the fans can be arrogant. Sports radio in Boston in the 90s had many slow days, while other towns would talk about their teams about to win it all, Boston would talk about which of their teams might be close. At one point, Ray Bourque left Boston to win a championship, and Boston had a parade. For a Colorado championship. But the attitude changed this decade.

6 championships can do that. Of course, Chicago had 6 championships in the 90s, but they were all from the Bulls. The difference in Boston is that there were three different teams winning during the decade. And also the scope of those championships.

The Patriots started with their first Super Bowl win in 2002. They won back to back Super Bowls in 2004 and 2005. Winning back to back is very difficult, ask the 2009 Steelers. The 3 wins make the dynasty of the Patriots in line with the Packers of the 60s, Steelers of the 70s, 49ers of the 80s, and Cowboys of the 90s. In addition, the Patriots went 16-0 in 2007, the only team to win every game in a 16 game regular season schedule. The pursuit for perfection ended in a Super Bowl loss to the Giants, but the Patriots still were the first team to make it to 18-0, although the Colts and Saints are challenging that this year.

The Red Sox won it all in 2004, ending the 86 year old Curse of the Bambino. They won it all again in 2007, which helped solidify the Sox as more than just a one year wonder. I wrote an article about the Red Sox being the MLB team of the decade. Boston is home to the Patriots and Red Sox, arguably the teams of the decade in their respective leagues.

The Celtics joined the championship parade in 2008, ending a 22 year drought for the NBA franchise with the most titles. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came to town to join Paul Pierce to return Boston to the top of the NBA hill. It also helps in Boston's claim to the sports city of the decade.
</intro>

    <intro>
I would like to say Congratulations to Jacoby Ellsbury for winning the 2009 Defensive player of the year.

Jacoby has earned this award for all of the awesome defensive plays he made this season and we will be looking forward to many more great defensive plays to come. Congrats Jacoby!

Jacoby Ellsbury has been brought up in the possible trade for A Gonz, from the San Diego Padres. Along side with Pitcher Clay Buckholtz, from what I'm hearing, the trade talks are dead and it looks like the deal will not go through because San Diego is asking "a ton".

According to ESPN's Jason Stark, he says that it will take a whole lot for the Boston Red Sox to aquire A Gonz. ESPN is reporting that the possible trade is unlikely, but could resume during the trade deadline.
</intro>

    <intro>
According to MLB.com, they are reporting that Mike Lowell will be examined by the Texas Rangers medical staff on Lowell's Right thumb. Questions about Mike Lowell started going on when Lowell had limited playing time with the Red Sox last season due to a sprained right thumb. The Red Sox are currentally agreed to trade Mike Lowell and the Red Sox are expected to send $9 million to help pay for the rest of Lowell's contract to Texas for Catcher Max Ramirez. But the trade has not been finalized pending Lowell's examination witht he Rangers Medical staff.

The Texas Rangers are looking for a right handed bat, to fill the need at DH and that can play the infeild corners. "Lowell, who turns 36 in February, is a 12-year veteran who hit .290 with 17 home runs and 75 RBIs for the Red Sox in 2009. He had a .337 on-base percentage and a .474 slugging percentage while playing 107 games at third base and eight at designated hitter." (MLB.com). Current Rangers Third Baseman Michael Young told ESPN Dallas.com That he has always been a fan of Mike Lowell and Lowell would bring a veteran presence in the locker room and his athletic ablity was incredable, He also said that Lowell would be an excelent fit for the Rangers ball club and Lowell bring with him Playoff experience and Lowell has 2 world series rings.

Being a Red Sox fan I really look at what both teams are looking at, one is Mike Lowell healthy enough and has he recoved from his sprained right thumb and Back issues. Two the Red Sox are possibly getting a catcher for the future. I think that it is an all around good trade but it will be hard to Mike leave Boston because of what he was able to reach with the Red Sox.

    <intro>
Although, to be fair, everyone does.

What I am starting to realize is that the hotter the hot stove league is, the less fun it is. If everyone just keeps seitching teams, then you really just end up rooting for laundry like Jerry Seinfeld said. Of course, the lack of loyalty extends far beyond the players as the owners and GMs will trade away a player just as fast as a player will go to a new team.
